The experience

Sounds make up words, voices, songs and the languages of our culture: the oral heritage represents a precious treasure, rich in identity distinctiveness, to be passed on to new generations. ROOTS TO HEAR – The Sounds of Memories is an immersive roots workshop to discover the sounds of different languages and oral heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The activity develops into a convivial aperitif, an informal moment of sharing, in which a glass of local wine, nectar bestowed by the ancient gods, frees the souls to listen, to hear the musicality of the words spoken by grandparents who emigrated in the past. A language workshop led by an expert will be held during the cocktail hour. The Friuli Venezia Giulia region has a very rich linguistic heritage: from the best known Friulian, defined as marilenghe, mother tongue, to Venetian and Istrovenetian, from Slovenian and its dialects, to Alpine dialects of German-speaking stock: the languages featured during the activity will be those of the ancestors, and it will be you, a traveler of roots, who will point out which ones they are. This is not just an experience to listen to, but more importantly to do: you will be invited to tell stories, fairy tales, nursery rhymes told by your ancestors, to share words and expressions in the language, perhaps lost in the everyday speech of our regional area. Here listening becomes a dialogue, a fruitful and enriching exchange, a bond of belonging to places of origin.

During the activity you can listen to traditional music and songs, and if the wine has accomplished its mission, you can also dance. Because music is celebration. Because the return home of those who have left is a celebration.

The entire activity is led by linguists and experts in local and area culture and a roots storyteller.
