The fires of this very ancient tradition, Epiphany, are rekindled every year with special gladness and solemnity in Tarcento. As in the days of your grandparents and great-grandparents, today the Friulian Epiphany lives an intense eve, on January 5, thanks to the pignarulârs who are the creators of the setting up of the Pignarûi that will be lit on the evening of January 6. They compete in an enthralling fiery chariot race in the presence of Old Venerable, a pivotal figure in the epiphanic rite, for the coveted Palio. On January 6 in the early evening, the historical procession parades through the crowds as it passes through the streets of the city center. The Venerando tells of ancient Epiphanies, then ascends, in torchlight, toward Coia, followed by thousands of flashlights thus creating a spectacular ribbon of fire along the hairpin bends of the hill. The Vieli Venerando (Old Worshipful One), a symbolic figure of grandfather and storyteller, lights the great bonfire, the Pignarûl Grant, and predicts based on the direction of the smoke the progress of the new vintage. At the close of the event a grandiose fireworks display leads your gaze to the future and its wonder with your feet firmly planted on your roots.
