Guided tour of Monte San Michele.
Monte San Michele, located in the northern part of the Isonzo Karst a short distance from Gorizia, offers a fascinating itinerary that mixes history and nature.
Through a series of routes accessible to all, it is possible to explore the various structures and monuments built on the slopes and on the four peaks of this karst relief, testimonies of the Great War.
Celebrated in the poems of Giuseppe Ungaretti, who fought there for months, Monte San Michele was the scene of bitter battles during the first year of the war on the Isonzo front.
Its summit, defended by Hungarian troops, played a crucial role in the defense of the front and Gorizia.
The Italian assaults on this 275-metre relief caused heavy losses, especially during the Second and Third Battle of the Isonzo.
Only in August 1916, during the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, did the conquest of the summit take place.
The battle area, an ideal starting point for the excursion, can be reached from Sagrado by following the signs for the top of the mountain and to get to the Frasche Trench, the Sassari Brigade Memorial Stone and the monumental Filippo Corridoni Memorial Stone.
After a brief resumption of the journey, you reach San Martino del Carso, a hamlet of Sagrado immersed in the tranquility of nature, but which in 1915 was located in the center of the front.
Here, you can read the famous poem by Ungaretti in Piazza della Fontana and visit the small museum run by the local Speleological Group.
Continuing towards the cemetery and then through Via Vallone and Via Bosco Cappuccio, you arrive at the memorial stone of the 4th Honved.
Following the CAI 73 Path, you begin the climb towards the open-air museum of Monte San Michele.
Crossing the Memorial Stone Trail around the four peaks, it is advisable to turn off to Cima 2 to visit the Schönburgtunnel.
Heading back towards Cima 3, you can admire the Third Army Gunboat Gallery, an impressive underground structure.
Finally, at the main square you can enjoy a splendid view towards the Collio and Gorizia and visit the Virtual Museum of the Great War, an experience that blends history and virtual technology.
