descrizione immagine

The experience

Every two years in the last week of August in Monrupino (Repen) the Karst Wedding, Kraška Ohcet in Slovenian, is celebrated, a folkloristic event that evokes a ceremonial from the late 1800s.

From Thursday to Sunday, visitors can attend the bachelor and hen parties, where the engaged couple greet their friends, the serenade dedicated by the fiancé to his beloved, the transport of the dowry to the groom’s house and, finally, on Sundays, the real Karst wedding in which about 500 people in popular costume take part. The wedding ceremony takes place in the church on Mount Tabor, then the guests walk to Repen, where they can still watch the handing over of the bride to the groom’s family in the Karst House. Usually, the celebrations of these four days are followed by thousands of onlookers and tourists.

It is an event that keeps alive a tradition of the Slovenian community of the Trieste Karst, and thanks to this itinerary, travelers of the roots will be able to relive the popular wedding customs experienced firsthand by many of our ancestors, in a territory rich in cultural diversity.
